On this Friendship Day, let us remember one of the most powerful and meaningful friendships in Indian epic tradition—the bond between Lord Rama and Vanara King Sugriva, as told in the Ramayana.

When Rama was exiled to the forest and Sita was abducted by Ravana, his journey led him to the mountains of Rishyamukha, where he met Sugriva, who was also in exile, betrayed by his own brother Vali.

Though strangers at first, they shared their sorrows and quickly built trust. Rama promised to help Sugriva reclaim his kingdom. In return, Sugriva pledged to help Rama find Sita. This mutual promise wasn’t just about alliance—it was the foundation of true friendship:

On this Friendship Day, we celebrate a unique and courageous bond from the Ramayana—the friendship between Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, and Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana.

Vibhishana, though born a Rakshasa and raised in the kingdom of Lanka, chose Dharma over loyalty to his brother. When he saw Ravana’s stubbornness and injustice in refusing to return Sita, he bravely left Lanka and sought refuge in Rama’s camp.

Though others doubted him, Rama welcomed Vibhishana with open arms, saying:

"Even if my enemy comes seeking protection, I will give him shelter. Vibhishana is not my enemy."
