Freedom Is a Song We Keep Singing

15 August 2026 · India's 80th Independence Day

A song that was born before freedom was

12 January 1947. Independence was still seven months away. That week, a Tamil film opened in cinemas—Naam Iruvar ("We Two"), directed by A. V. Meiyappan, and the very first film produced under the AVM banner.

The story itself was modest. But the film did something that outlived it: it brought Bharati's poems into a movie hall. Aaduvome pallu paaduvome. Vetri ettu thikkum etta. Sung by D. K. Pattammal, set to music by R. Sudarsanam.

The film opens at a Subramania Bharati memorial gathering. It ends at the celebration of Gandhi's 77th birthday. Freedom hadn't arrived yet—and people were already singing.

In January 1947, months before the flag went up, a film put Bharati's verses on a cinema screen. India wasn't free yet. People sang anyway. That is the whole point of the song.

The historian Randor Guy wrote that the film had nothing directly to do with the freedom movement—but that it caught the mood of the moment perfectly. That is what made it a hit.

Why "Aaduvome" still matters

When Bharati wrote that song, India was in chains. He did not write "we will dance when freedom comes." He wrote "let us dance, let us sing"—present tense, right now, in captivity. Celebrating after the victory is easy. Singing before it arrives is faith.

Seventy-nine years have passed. We raise the flag, hand out sweets, and forget it by evening. But freedom isn't a date on a calendar—it's a habit.

What to do this Independence Day — 7 ideas

1. Listen to one song properly. "Aaduvome Pallu Paaduvome" — the 1947 recording in D. K. Pattammal's voice. Put the phone down. Five minutes. Follow the words as you listen.

2. Ask the oldest person you know one question. "Where was our family in 1947?" That single question opens up a family history. If you don't ask this year, there may be nobody left to ask. Record the answer on your phone.

3. Memorise one Bharati poem. A single stanza is enough. "Nimirndha nannadai" or "Ellorum nallirukka vendum." Then teach it to a child.

4. Learn about one freedom fighter you don't already know. Someone other than Gandhi, Nehru or Bhagat Singh. V. O. Chidambaranar. Tiruppur Kumaran. Matangini Hazra. Twenty minutes of reading.

5. Treat the flag with care. Skip the paper flags—by evening they're lying in the street. Buy one good cloth flag and use it every year.

6. Do something for your own street. Give it one hour. Clean a stretch of road. Plant a tree. Donate books to a government school. Freedom isn't only a right—it's a responsibility too.

7. Write down what your freedom would be. One page. What do you want to be free of this year? Fear, laziness, an old grudge, someone else's approval. Write it, date it, and open it next 15 August.

Wishes

Happy Independence Day!

May your home have light. May your mind be without fear. May your voice never be lowered.

Bharati asked for something quite small — "Ellorum nallirukka vendum." Let everyone live well. That's all. Seventy-nine years on, and eightieth year. That's still the work left to do.

Let us dance. Let us sing. Still.

— Vande Mataram

Freedom Is a Song We Keep Singing

In January 1947, months before the flag went up, a film called Naam Iruvar put Bharati's verses on a cinema screen. India wasn't free yet. People sang anyway. That is the whole point of the song.

Bharati didn't write "we will dance when we are free." He wrote "let us dance, let us sing" — present tense, while still in chains. Celebrating after the victory is easy. Singing before it arrives is faith.

— 7 ideas

Listen to one song properly — no scrolling.

Ask the oldest person you know where your family was in 1947. Record it on your phone.

Buy one cloth flag that lasts, not paper flags that end up in the gutter by evening.

May your home have light. May your mind be without fear. May your voice never be lowered.

Let us dance. Let us sing. Still.
