Whatever the matter, and from whosever mouth it is heard — to see in it the true thing: that is wisdom.

பொங்கல் afternoon, the plates cleared, the television on for the one programme everyone in the house agrees about. Four speakers on two benches. A topic no professor would call literature — who builds a good family, the husband or the wife? And at the table between the benches, an old teacher in a white shirt, hands folded, waiting his turn.

He waits a long time. He lets them finish. Then he stands, says அன்பு தாய்மார்களே, and the room goes quiet the way a classroom goes quiet.

For four decades that was the sound of a Tamil holiday. On Friday, 11 September 2026, it stopped. Solomon Pappaiah died in Madurai, aged ninety.

What Tamil lost this week is not an orator. Tamil has never been short of orators. What it lost is a method — and the method was already written down, in two lines, a very long time before Doordarshan found a slot for it.

423 — the seating plan of a pattimandram

Read the couplet again and notice what it refuses to say. It does not say weigh the speaker. It does not say pick a side. Valluvar puts no weight at all on யார்யார் — whoever, anyone, all of them — and the entire weight on மெய்ப்பொருள், the true thing. Wisdom is not in the hearing. It is in the discerning that comes after.

That is not a maxim about debate. That is the floor plan of one. Two benches, four mouths, every one of them certain; one chair in the middle whose only job is the last clause of the kural. Pappaiah spent his working life in that chair — by various counts seven to twelve thousand times, in halls across Tamil Nadu, then in Malaysia, Singapore and the United States, on Doordarshan from 1982 and on Sun TV for the generation after that.

The bench that came to win, armed with Sangam citation and one good joke.
The bench that came to win, armed with the same citation read the other way.
நடுவர்மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது — not a winner. The true thing.

He is remembered for the தீர்ப்பு, the ruling, and it is worth being exact about what his rulings actually were. They were about a line long. They rarely handed anyone a trophy. They took the best sentence from each bench, set it down where it belonged, and left the audience holding something usable on Monday morning. A ruling that only announces a winner teaches nobody; both benches already knew how to want that. A ruling that names the true thing teaches everyone in the hall, the losing bench included, and the man in the middle chair most of all.

The professor behind the microphone

The television came late. Before it, and through it, he was a Tamil teacher: The American College, Madurai, from 1961 to 1994, ending as head of the department — a first-batch MA in Tamil from Thiagarajar College who never quite left the classroom, he only kept enlarging it.

His commentaries — on the Thirukkural, on Purananuru and Akananuru — were written in plain Tamil, which is harder to write than ornate Tamil and much less rewarded by one's peers. He did not translate the classics downward. He talked to the audience as though they had always been entitled to them, which they had. And he declined the cheap bargain on offer to every Tamil scholar of his generation: pride in Tamil, he kept saying, needs no enmity towards Sanskrit or English; each language has its own strengths.

  • Born 22 February at Sathangudi, near Thirumangalam, Madurai district
  • Joins The American College, Madurai, as a lecturer in Tamil
  • Pattimandram reaches Doordarshan; the debate moves into the living room
  • Retires as Head of the Tamil department after thirty-three years
  • Kalaimamani, Government of Tamil Nadu
  • Muthamizh Perarignar, Annamalai University
  • Padma Shri, for literature and education
  • Dies 11 September in Madurai; state honours, Thathaneri

The laugh was the vehicle, never the cargo

He was funny, and it matters how. The humour came out of watching people closely — the small contradictions in how households actually run — not out of writing jokes. A pause was enough. A tilt of the head was enough. And then, with the studio still laughing, the substantive point would go in, and stay in.

The panels I remember most fondly are the பழகுவோம் ones with the doctors: physicians in front of a Tamil professor, each of them certain, medicine's seriousness colliding with his comic timing — and then the one quiet question from the middle chair that made the whole set laugh and then think. That is not a comedian's timing. It is a teacher's: laugh first, remember later.

Cinema noticed, of course. He appeared as himself in Duet (1994), then in Shankar's Boys and, most famously, in Sivaji alongside Rajinikanth, where his timing landed exactly as the director had hoped — Shankar said this week that he had looked forward to those festival pattimandrams all his life, and Rajinikanth that Pappaiah was the man who carried the form to ordinary people. He could have built a second career out of it; reportedly more than two hundred offers followed, and he let them all go. He went back to the table and the blackboard. A man who had spent his life naming the true thing presumably knew which of the two was his.

Appearing with fame

If you must appear, appear with fame; for those without it, not appearing would have been better.

He appeared with fame — not the purchased kind, the kind earned by making a difficult inheritance available to people who had never been told it was theirs. The Kural belonged to the whole language. He handed it over one couplet at a time, at breakfast, to anyone who had the set switched on.

So the fitting tribute is not a garland. It is to do the thing the couplet asks. Let all four benches speak. Refuse the pleasure of declaring a winner. Find the true thing and say it in one line, in language your neighbour can use.

அன்பு தாய்மார்களே — the ruling stands.
